I am. And hello. And today we're going to have kind of an off the cuff podcast we are talking about, of course, these holidays, Christmas New Years. Right. And others we're gonna talk. Yeah. And in finishing out 2021 And starting 2022 ending your new year, that type of thing. We're going to talk about employee retention.
Rob Van Buskirk:
Whoo. You mean employee retention during the Great resignation? As it is called? Yes. Yes, yes. And we have a three tips that could help solidify and help you in your business. sure that you don't lose, folks. Because I think the last stats I saw is there's like about a 40% increase in just the last few months of people just leaving for for numerous reasons, right, Don? I mean, we see people that don't want to commute, like, we worked at home for a year, why should I have to go to an office? Also, why are businesses investing in buildings and other people? Right? That's been a big thing. What other what other areas? Have you seen dawn that why people don't, that are resigning and doing their own thing.
Dawn Van Buskirk:
Um, they are sick of working for what we used to call the man, the corporate machine. People are disgruntled with the way they're being treated. You know, and, and this is not even going down the rabbit hole of you are required to get a vaccine, you're not required to get a vaccine, you know, all that COVID, you know, issues going on in different businesses and different business practices. This is just really people fed up with certain cultures. And it is so important, if you want to keep your employees to to, to have a great culture, and to so they will want to come to work, whether that's want to log into their Zoom meeting at home, you know, from their, from their, you know, couch or if it's coming into an actual office. Yep,
Rob Van Buskirk:
yep. Yep, definitely. Those are, those are the keys. And I think we have to adapt, you know, we've had to adapt when the pandemic, the onset of the pandemic 2020, it is still going. Lot of places think it's over. But it's not. I know, our team vanarama Team doing some traveling this year, and mandates are mandated. And there are certain places country states that yet you have to do this. And you have to do that. There's just some really key pieces. Yeah, so we're gonna talk about the first three things, then Don, you mentioned talking about the holidays, and we're gonna talk a bit about the best stuff. So the first step that you can do to help retain your team is don't just pay them. And what we noticed with our teams, it's like, okay, the money is always there, right? But they want to know that you are invested in them, and you want to get to know them better, and who they are, and what are they like to eat and who's their their partners or significant others, husbands, wives, children, or don't have children or dogs or cats or whoever get to know them as on a human level, and stop just thinking that we're in this industrialized, you know, portion of history, which we're not, you know, we don't put tires and wheels on cars anymore, like we used to do. We know that corporate America came out of the industrialized revolution. And we know that Ford and other large manufacturers, the education system followed what they needed and they need people to bolt you know, engines together and and wheels on tires and stuff. So in that means just that nine to five grind, and we're coming out of that, and that's why people resigning So get to know your folks get to know what's going on what makes them tick. What's what's really going on with them. I think that's really number one. Number two things. Well, hang on, there's more. Yes.
Dawn Van Buskirk:
Quarterly team meetings get together in person I know during COVID That was probably not the case, but get to know them. And there's quite a bit of team building exercises you can do whether you're in person, or there are some companies out there that do some cool online via zoom team, fun games and stuff. Get get to know you know, your employees, you know, everyone that you work with, you know, no matter what role they are in the business, just just to be able to know who they are, you know, what's your favorite color? What What kind of food do they like? Because there may be a time when, you know, you need you need to send them something because you know, they need something and it'd be good to know what they like maybe they have allergies. So things like that team meetings, just just really being intentional to meet and not just meet to meet, and we're having a meeting and talking business, but actually meet to to, to build the team to to build that culture. So, just want to expand on number one. So go ahead.
Rob Van Buskirk:
No, no. Okay, thank you. No it, it is about the culture, it's not as much about the dollar. And, and you also speaking the dollar piece is you need to pay top market to retain folks. So pay that because you know what they deserve it? And why do they deserve it? Because number two on our list to on is to tell them why the position matters and why they matter. Why is it that answering this phone matters? Why is it that maintaining this chatbot matters? Why is it that meeting with this client? matters so much? Right?
Dawn Van Buskirk:
So you're saying, Tell them what the vision is?
Rob Van Buskirk:
And why Wow, and the why you gotta have the why if you don't have a why you don't know who
Dawn Van Buskirk:
it is important to know where you're going. And it is important to tell your team or you're going so they know, otherwise, everyone goes off the rails. And and so it's it's not about you know, we're just going to pay you more to keep doing this job. It's this is the vision, are you on board, we want to you know, give you the resources we want to develop you. Is this the seat you want to be in with the business? Or, Oh, are you interested in this seat over here? Or this one or this one? So it's really just, you know, again, the culture, it's really the transparency of you know, we're growing, there are other seats that can be filled. And, you know, and knowing how they're doing, where they're at, and what their what their hopes and dreams are? Where do they want to be? In one years and three years, that type of thing?
Rob Van Buskirk:
How are you going to develop them, that's the key is develop the people and and that really leads into number three is how we develop here at Van Ryan compliance is we love K RAS key result areas, you gotta have metrics. And it's not a metrics just for the metric, just just for the sake of it just to have a number. It's about saying what you're going to do how you're going to do it to develop yourself, develop yourself physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally. And when your employees and your associates are developed and poured into, then they can pour into your customers. I mean, let me say that, again, when you pour into your employees, they will pour into your customers. So think about how you can do that. How can you pour into them? How can you help them with things you're they're struggling with? How can you help them be healthy? Because health is wealth as we know, right? So definitely expand on that a little bit more the okay raised on lows carries.
Dawn Van Buskirk:
Yes. Well, and it's this is this is very important. And it's important to be it's important for your team to be healthy. This is not this is personal and professional carries healthy habits, healthy habits, and and just to continue that, you know, no one wants to do the grind. Come in leave you know that that's no one wants to do that. So have have those healthy parts of your day. Whether it's midday morning, you know, afternoon, set aside time for for you and your health. And we tell our employees that it's very important, because no one wants to be burnt out. And that's not why we're here. That's not why we do what we do. We are here to serve people in whatever product or service you have. We're here to serve. And we want to have employees that want to serve and work together for that, that common goal, that vision.
Rob Van Buskirk:
So, gotta have the vision. You gotta know where you're going. You gotta have your one year three year plans and all that I think we'll expand on that and some of the other podcasts for next year. But I know we're looking at mid December is a ties back to the 16th as we record this today, and we have the holidays coming so you mentioned Dawn we're gonna talk about holidays and New Year. Yeah, are we ready?
Dawn Van Buskirk:
Yes, we are ready. So this year van Ryan is going to be closed for till the 30 till well till we return on the 33rd so we will be closed for two weeks. This is to give our employees time to go home. Basically across the country. This is time for for them to spend time with their family and friends and time for for our Our family to spend time with our family and friends as well. And also, one, you know, reminding our, our, our clients, it's time that they need to spend time with family and friends. And I think there's a lot more people on board with this now, even if it's the crazy uncle, because with COVID, a lot of folks couldn't see each other. So this is very important. I think this is a very important year, we're seeing more people traveling, and I think it's great. I know, there's a lot of restrictions, you know, we'll get through it. And we just all need to be safe, and just enjoy this time. We can't just wait around for the pandemic to be gone. I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon. But I'm not a medical professional or a scientist, so, but I can say that you need to live your life and be mindful and careful, and do what you think is best for you and your family. So that is Yeah, so we are we are going to enjoy our time. And I want you all to enjoy your time as well. And Be Safe and Enjoy the Christmas season. And the New Year's ringing in the New Years.
Rob Van Buskirk:
So yep, holiday season and all of that and, and you celebrate how you celebrate and you worship, how you worship, and you enjoy the time off the family and friends. And so over the next couple of weeks, we're going to go ahead and we're gonna have a podcast, but they're gonna be the best of it, get some good ones are top rated ones from this fall. And you'll hear those best of podcasts from the van Ryan team. All right, Don. So just to recap, the three actions people can take back and help prepare for next year, and make sure they keep their employees is number one.

Invest in them. Not just monetarily, but invest in them be invested in them to you know, in their, them their personal life, their, you know, just them as a person.
Rob Van Buskirk:
And then to tell them why their position matters and the impact it makes into their customers and others that is great. And then number three, your favorite the care. Right, right?
Dawn Van Buskirk:
Carries have a metric of what you know, what winning looks like, is what what the role, you know, winning looks like in their role and, and also to navigate their personal personal goals as well as the the the company vision. So
Rob Van Buskirk:
yep, yep, definitely. The one the two and the three. Yeah, yes.
Dawn Van Buskirk:
And, and I'm just going to put out a little carrot for 2022 podcasts, we're going to kick off the year with, you know, goal talking about goals, and and kind of prepping for the year. But the first the first podcast that I'm going to, we're going to have excuse me, both of us, not just me, is with our attorney or a state planner. She's a wonderful woman. And I really think that during this time people realize, ooh, I need some plans. And this is something that we feel very passionate about, obviously disaster recovery being in compliance. But that is going to be the kickoff to the year is estate planning. So that's going to be one one that we have in mind that I will tell you about now. So just keep an eye out for that.
