Dawn Van Buskirk:

Hello and welcome to VanRein Compliance Podcast, Thsi is our very first one .

Rob Van Buskirk:

That's it the show that secures the future do business with a clear plan, reduce your risk. I'm your host, Rob Van Buskirk.

Dawn Van Buskirk:

And I'm Dawn Van Buskirk, co host and CEO of VanRein Compliance

Rob Van Buskirk:

We're the co founders. And we figured you know what, what better way to start off our great new podcasts with a little bit of who was VanRien and why are we here? Right? Yeah. All right. Dawn, as our CEO and hello folks there in YouTube world, we're gonna go ahead and start it off. Why are we here? What are we? Why are we here? That's it.

Dawn Van Buskirk:

Well, we believe that it is every person's human right to have their privacy secure. That is really our mission and to educate, and show you how data privacy is important and why, how and why.

Rob Van Buskirk:

Gotta have your eye on your why you got to make sure you know why, or there's no reason in Van Ryan started. You know, this has been like a five year journey. Some of us that know us or some folks that know us, I should say, remember this. Our first podcast is states that we've had a few name changes. But VanRien the first question I always get is where did van Ryan come from? So we know from Van Buskirk is our last name, and your last name dawn.

Dawn Van Buskirk:

My maiden name is Reinecke , German Yes, yes. So van and Ryan. There you go.

Rob Van Buskirk:

Van and Rien. So we put those together can put the band right in compliance, and we're here to secure the future of business with a clear plan to reduce your risk. So van Ryan is focused on education, Van Ryan is focused on compliance with HIPAA, HB 300, in the state of Texas, GDPR in Europe, CCPA in California, New York shield in New York. Oh, boy, we got Virginia and Ohio up next. And it's really focused on education and data privacy. You know, one thing dawn that you're really passionate about is the education piece. So why don't you tell the listeners about our education platform? And why do we have that? How do we write

Dawn Van Buskirk:

this has been my baby all year is we are launching this week, our new training platform, very exciting off our rent van Ryan compliance.com website, our own training platform will have a suite of courses available for you to take as well as for you to offer your staff, whether this be HIPAA compliance, whether it be state specific training, GDPR training, if you're doing business, with companies in the EU, we're very focused on education. customers need to know how to navigate compliance we are here we are your guides. That is really what we are about that is our mission. And we are here to help your business and and secure the legacy of your business. We work with a lot of different sizes of businesses, and a lot of businesses that our family run as well. So we want to protect the legacy of each and every business that we work with.

Rob Van Buskirk:

That's definitely the focus, you know, and and people go well, why compliance? You know, what, why? Because it gets boring, right? And it's dry. And it's like, why do we want to do this? What we do it really to simplify it, I mean, and we do it so we don't have to use spreadsheets and word documents. If your risk assessor hello folks on the YouTube channel, if you hire a company and they bring in Excel or Word you need to turn away and run there is no reason for Excel or anything in any assessments to be modern, online platforms that simplify it. And using AI, that's we do it at Van rank compliance is really to simplify that and make it simple for you. So some of the things that we also get asked here, since is our first podcast is where did this all begin? Well, this table for the folks on YouTube, we could say this as an old friendly family heirloom. And we sat at this table what four and a half years, five, almost five years ago. And I told Dawn here I said, Hey, I'm done. My after 15 years in corporate America, a couple layoffs becoming you know, stop being the cog in the wheel and really start being more of a linchpin Seth Godin. There you go, see? And John since what Ethan was, what, six? Yeah. What did you say? It's a mom.

Dawn Van Buskirk:

What does that mean? There's a long pause. What do you mean? What do you mean? What

Rob Van Buskirk:

do you mean? Well,

Dawn Van Buskirk:

why? Where's the money coming from?

Rob Van Buskirk:

You don't need I don't need the money. It's fine. Because remember, guys, we're fine. Living in a van down by the river, right? Totally, perfectly fine. This is just exactly how it is. But yes, so we, we it sounds like the cliche American story, but it's what we did. Yep, cash out the 401 K's sold the house packed up the wagon and off on our adventure. And a lot of people go How do you do that? Because well, hope and prayer. trust and faith and you go, you just jump out. Too many people don't jump and take that risk and do something different and do something unique. Yep. So we went off. And we had many, many, many, many, many, many failures, because this business is built on failure. All businesses are built on failure to really make an impact in society. Yeah, so that's where we started putting together the need. And the problem we saw was an issue with poor compliance and poor technology merged into one. And then we found out that, yeah, nobody has really any good compliance, right? And people are just uneducated

Dawn Van Buskirk:

and stressed out and stressed out, too. We take what to do. Yep, we take the stress and the confusion off you and guide you with your compliance. We help you navigate through the compliance, journey. Compliance. The other the other thing that people think is it's a checkbox. One done, we're done. Yeah. Moving on. Maybe we'll see you next year. Who cares? I have the documents. I'm good. That is not. That is not what we think that is not right. Compliance is ongoing. You need to maintain it every year. Yeah, there are certain things that you need to do. And you need to have a good compliance officer. Some of you folks may say, what, who's that? Who's that? Why? Well, your compliance officer, you should have a compliance officer. And they should know what they need to do is what to do to implement policies and procedures on how to maintain your compliance, it's very important and need to educate your staff and understand what compliance is, and what happens if there's a breach. That's where we come in. And we simplify this for you. It's really a simple three step process. Risk assessment is number one. Number two is going to be policies and procedures, create those policies and procedures, if you don't already have them, customize them for your business. And three is business associate agreements, helping with those, and making sure that you have those signed with your partners, whether they're covered entities or business associates. And the fourth thing, I should have said, step four, step four is gonna be training training is extremely important. Understand what personal data is, what data security is,

Rob Van Buskirk:

yep, 123, and four, and four, and four. Yes, that's, that's definitely the keys. The other things too, is you want a culture of compliance, you don't want something just boring and standard, you need to get people to buy into protecting the data, like it's their own, that's the key, you need to make sure that, you know, when you receive an email, or a phone call or a conversation or anything, it's like, okay, treat this, like it's my own kind of go golden rule, right? Treat others the way you want to be treated. So you need to build that culture. And that's part of why we wanted to start this podcast is to educate you and help you and give you the tools. So you can take back to your businesses in your, in your world of employment, role of unemployment, sure, we'll go with that business as an employment so that you can actually help make a difference and change and change the way we handle data. Those are the big pieces here.

Dawn Van Buskirk:

And through this podcast, we not only want to educate and talk compliance, but we also want to bring on guests, we are going to have guests, and we're going to have a lots of different guests from lots of different industries talking about lots of different things, a lot of big, big things we want to talk about customer service, customer experience. We've all lived through good and bad through that. Yeah, it's very important. Obviously compliance. It all ties in together with that so and educating your your staff just really education, beyond compliance as well. There's all sorts of education, you can help your your staff with, so really a lot of really good guests will have and from a lot of different industries that hopefully you'll relate to.

Rob Van Buskirk:

Yep, Yep, definitely. It's gonna be definitely good. It's gonna be fun. It's gonna be exciting. As we said, fresh it's gonna be something new. And not just boring. We don't. Yeah, we don't like boring. We don't like boring. Yep. Kind of like when we show the podcast or we said Don't talk like NPR. Yes.

Dawn Van Buskirk:

Yes. Don't talk like that.

Rob Van Buskirk:

So, and also the podcast, you may hear dogs. Yes. Maybe kiddo once a while, but that's kind of fun things to do. Yep, yep. So what are some of the three things people can take back from our first podcast? Dawn is our CEO that they can go and that they can take back to their team.

Dawn Van Buskirk:

Compliance is easy. It is. It is very easy. Well, it's easy. We say that compliance does not have to be hard. Compliance does not have to be stressful. So what we want you to learn from this is that we are here to educate and support you and your business and guide you and navigate you through your compliance.

Rob Van Buskirk:

Yep, definitely, exactly the education piece as we talked about educate, educate, educate, we've got an LMS where you can go and you can take the training you need and educate your team and what they need to how to handle you know, data and what to do with that. And how to keep that going. And then third, make sure you have a good technology partner. Don't four vendor vendor are the people that throw peanuts at you at the ballgame, if we go to ball games anymore. But a partner has your best interests in mind. And as a customer of ours, a lot of our customers will hear me harp on that. Make sure you have a good partner so that they have your best interest in mind. That's key. That's great. Yep. Yeah, totally. Awesome. Awesome. Well, I think we did pretty good. For first one, we're gonna find out yeah, we'll

Dawn Van Buskirk:

find out.
